Treatment and Care of Koi
There are many kinds of diseases found in Koi. It is already too late when one detects the
real symptoms of sickness. It is vitally important to be able to predict and detect
sickness by the behaviour of your koi and apply treatment accordingly...

How To Find Diseases In Their Early Stages

You should always watch your koi's bodies, their way of swimming or
abnormal behaviors in order to find their diseases in the early stages.

Change of the surface of the body...
As the symptom of a disease usually appears on the surface of the
body, you will find it, if you watch your koi closely. The most cases are
caused by Lernaea and Argulus which can be easily found. They often
live on the pectoral fin. When the surface of the body is congested,
lacks luster or is covered with white membrane, the koi must be
examined carefully.

A Diseased koi leaves its group...
Healthy koi swims together, but a diseased koi leaves its
group. When the diseased advances, the koi begins to float
in the water. In the more serious stage it has no energy to
stop even when it knocks against the wall.
Koi with Lernaea and Angulus gather together in the corner
of the pond.

Diseased koi stay in the bottom of the pond
with their pectoral fins open...
When they are sleeping, koi stay still in the bottom with
their pectoral fins closed. Diseased koi lay themselves in
the bottom with their pectoral fins open.
If they are stimulated, they swim for a moment, but soon
they sink. They do not choose the place where they stay.
Not only on flat, comfortable place, but also on a slope,
or uneven place they stay.

Diseased Koi breath hard...
Usually koi breath quietly but diseased koi breath hardly.
When they look agonizing, they are seriously ill. It is
abnormal that they come up to the surface and breath.
Koi must be inspected, when they swim around just under
the surface, breathing with their mouths wide open.

Diseased koi lose their appetite and their excrements
become abnormal...
Koi must be closely examined, when they do not eat. Their
excrements become abnormal. When they are liquid, the disease
must be serious.

Gills are often affected by a disease...
A koi which does not show any change but looks tired
sometimes has diseased gills. They become white or black,
or deformed. This is ''gill rot''.
An unhealthy looking koi requires close examination.
TREATMENT...
There are such treatment as oral administration, medical bath,
applications, injections and operation.
Oral administration...
Medicines are added to the bait. This treatment is given when
koi suffer from nutrition lesion and bacterially caused
diseases. Some medicines for promoting nutrition, drugs,
antibiotic substances are used. Some are dissolved in water
and added to food pallets. Some are mixed with paste bait and
then introduced to the koi by feeding them.

Medicated Baths...
A medicated bath is given to diseased koi to exterminate
their parasite or bacterially caused diseased. It is also
effective against internal disease caused by bacteria.
Medicine is being absorbed through the skin or gills of the
koi. There are two methods for using medical baths. One is a
short time (5 to 10 minutes) medicated bath and the other is
long time (several days) medicated bath. It is necessary to
measure the exact dosage of medicine correctly. Therefore is
most advisable to consult a dealer or specialist and obtain
the correct medication and dosage. Too much would kill or
harm the koi instead of saving him/her.
Applications...
Applications are used for external wounds of koi. Mercurochrome
and tincture of iodine are effective. Ulcers of a disease like "hole
disease", the ulcer must be completely removed and the
applications will be put on the affected part.
Injections...
Injection of sulfa drugs and antibiotic substance is given to koi
affected by bacterial diseases. There are injections both into the
muscle and the abdomen. The intramuscular injection is into the
muscle under the pectoral fins or that behind the anus.
Operations...
Diseased koi are operated under anesthesia. For example,
a tumor of the reproductive organ can be removed by an
operation. The operated koi should be kept in Rinnger's
solution with much calcium for a while.
HOW TO INTRODUCE NEW KOI INTO THE POND... When purchased, Koi are put in a plastic bag containing a little water and oxygen and must be carried quickly and safely to the place you intend to keep them. It is important that they are not shocked during transport. Before putting a new fish in the pond, let the unopened plastic bag float on the pond surface for about 15-30 minutes. When the temperatures of the water inside the bag and the pond have equalized, open the bag and gently let the fish out of the bag and into the pond. Try not to put the water from the bag into the pond.
